The heart of the UK throbbed with the rhythms of Zimbabwean and South African music on the 27th and 28th of July, as the annual Zimfest music festival transformed the city into a kaleidoscope of vibrant cultural celebration. The festival, headlined by Zimbabwean reggae-dancehall sensation Winky D and South African Amapiano virtuoso Daliwonga, attracted a diverse audience from Germany, Poland, and the United States, including the acclaimed American DJ duo Lex and Answer.

Spanning across three stages, the family-friendly festival catered to all age groups, ensuring a memorable experience for everyone. The main stage became a focal point of energy as Winky D delivered an electrifying performance that kept the crowd enthralled. On the Amapiano stage, Daliwonga’s pulsating beats resonated through the air, ensuring non-stop dancing. Meanwhile, the Boogie Bus stage provided a relaxed ambiance with DJs spinning timeless Zimbabwean hits from legends like Busi Mhlanga and Lovemore Majaivana.
Children enjoyed their dedicated playground section, replete with various rides and a makeshift football pitch. Their joyous laughter and excited shouts echoed throughout the day, complemented by the sunny weather that enhanced the festive atmosphere, making it an ideal family outing.
Culinary delights were a significant highlight, with food stalls offering a mouth-watering array of Afro-themed dishes such as Sadza, cow foot, and Boerewors. The enticing aroma of these traditional foods, coupled with the sight of Zimbabwean and South African flags fluttering in the breeze, created an immersive African experience.
Among the notable attendees were Ambassador Katsande, former footballer Benjani, and Zimtrade CEO Allan Majuru, who was on a mission to explore trade opportunities between the UK and Zimbabwe. The Zimfest Business Park was a hub of activity, with companies like Nyaradzo, Econet, Mukuru, Ngoto Craft, Masau Gin, Remitly, Diaspora Insurance, and Wiremit showcasing their products and services. The absence of CBZ was noted but did not overshadow the vibrant commerce that took place.
Adults enjoyed a wide selection of beverages, including Lion, Castle, and Zambezi Lager, as well as Hunters Cider and the traditional Scud Chibhuku, evoking nostalgic connections to home.
Musically, the festival was a showcase of talent and energy. Winky D’s performance was the standout act, but Shinsoman’s remarkable return after a long hiatus also captivated the audience. Other notable performers included Pontian, ExQ, Sulu Chimbetu, Saintfloew, Enzo Ishal, DJ Tira, and the enchanting Feli Nandi.”
The palpable excitement and joy underscored the festival’s success, with Zimfest CEOs Marvin and Jade Muchando expressing their delight at the sold-out event. They highlighted the importance of showcasing Zimbabwean musical talent and providing a platform for Zimbabwean businesses to connect with the diaspora market.
Despite minor challenges such as slow traffic exiting the event due to the large turnout, the festival was a resounding success. The presence of over two thousand cars in the car park was a testament to the enthusiasm for Zimfest. Many families are already looking forward to next year’s event, eagerly anticipating the artists and experiences it will bring.
Looking ahead, the organizers have announced plans for an expanded business park at next year’s festival. Several Zimbabwean-based businesses, including building companies, insurance brokers, grocery traders, and holiday resort companies, have shown interest in engaging with the diaspora market.”
Zimfest 2024 not only celebrated Zimbabwean culture but also strengthened the bonds within the diaspora community, leaving everyone eagerly anticipating the next edition of this remarkable festival.
