Zimbabwe is mourning the untimely death of one of its most beloved fitness icons and martial artists, Sensei Mugove “Mugo” Muhambi, who died early Saturday morning in a tragic road accident along Borrowdale Road.

The accident involved a Honda Fit and a Toyota GD6 in a head-on collision that claimed the life of the renowned karateka and fitness trainer, sending shockwaves through communities across the country.

Affectionately known as “Sensei Mugo”, the fourth Dan black belt was a towering figure both physically and in spirit. His passing has left a void in the martial arts, fitness, and entertainment sectors, where he was known not only for his discipline and strength but also for his warm and humble character.
Sensei Mugo’s martial arts journey began during his primary school days, when he trained in Seido Kan Karate under the mentorship of Shihan Misheck Chiwayo. Over the years, he climbed the ranks to become a branch chief in Kyokushin Kan, representing Zimbabwe in several international competitions and winning multiple medals and accolades.
In 2016, his peers recognized his leadership and commitment by electing him as Vice President of the Zimbabwe Karate Union, a position that allowed him to influence the growth of the sport nationally.
But Sensei Mugo was more than just a martial artist. He became a household name in Zimbabwe through his tireless work in promoting health and fitness, running boot camps, personal training sessions, and children’s karate lessons. He was also a charismatic screen presence, appearing as “Zola” in a popular local drama series on ZBC.
Mugo was also a bodyguard to many people and provided security at various events.

“Two functions I once attended and he was my bodyguard such a lovely guy. That little time we shared I will cherish it Go well Mugo

Tributes have poured in from across the world, with social media flooded with emotional messages and memories. Prominent figures such as Advocate Fadzayi Mahere, music promoter Simbarashe “Bodyslam” Chakare, influencer Jackie Ngarande, James Pande, comedian Mai Tt, UK-based DJ Fleva, and musicians Willis Wataffi and Trevor Dongo all paid their respects to the man many described as “Zimbabwe’s most loved bouncer.”
“He wasn’t just a fitness trainer — he was a motivator, a protector, a brother, and a friend to many,” wrote one mourner.
As Zimbabwe comes to terms with this devastating loss, many are remembering Sensei Mugo not just for his physical strength, but for the strength he gave others — to believe in themselves, to get healthier, to fight harder, and to live with purpose.
