HARARE, ZIMBABWE — The Zimbabwe College of Music (ZCM) is set to host a groundbreaking Contemporary Traditional Workshop on March 26, 2026, as Mbiravolution continues to redefine the evolution of the mbira in modern music spaces. The highly anticipated session will feature a dynamic collaboration between ethnomusicologist Hector Rufaro Mugani and celebrated Urban Mbira Player Alexio Kawara.

The workshop follows the success of February’s Manomwe Mazwi Bangiza Master Class, led by mbira legend Wilfred Tichaona “Nyamasvisva” MaAfrika, which drew widespread acclaim within Zimbabwe’s arts community. With each installment, the Mbiravolution residency has cemented itself as an essential platform for both emerging and established musicians seeking to deepen their craft.
Designed to accommodate a broad spectrum of participants, the sessions provide foundational skills for beginners while simultaneously challenging experienced players to expand their musical vocabulary. Through an innovative approach, advanced practitioners are encouraged to explore complex melodic structures and contemporary harmonies, positioning the mbira as a leading instrument in modern ensemble performance.
Zimbabwe College of Music Executive Director Rachel Jera-Chigwanda highlighted the importance of the initiative in advancing professional musical standards.
“Our core business is music, and our mission is to equip musicians with the highest level of technical and industry knowledge,” she said. “This collaboration reflects our commitment to bridging heritage with modern musical careers and fostering innovation at the highest level.”
The Mbiravolution journey began in March 2025 with an introductory session at Consultus Publishing Services, later expanding through strategic engagements, including a pivotal event at ZCM in October 2025. The initiative officially launched its residency in 2026, steadily building momentum through monthly workshops that merge traditional knowledge with contemporary practice.
Alexio Kawara, a household name in Zimbabwean music, brings a unique urban contemporary perspective to the mbira, inspired by the late maestro Taku Mafika. Known for his hit song “Chikokoko,” Kawara’s work exemplifies the seamless fusion of traditional sounds with modern arrangements.
Hector Mugani, creator of the Manomwe Mazwi system, continues to lead the technical and academic advancement of mbira performance, with his research and upcoming publication contributing to the instrument’s global relevance.
The workshop will run from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Zimbabwe College of Music in Harare.
