BIRMINGHAM, UNITED KINGDOM – The Zimbabwe Achievers Awards (ZAA) has announced a special tribute to legendary musician Thomas Tafirenyika Mapfumo as part of its UK Gala Dinner scheduled for 16 May 2026 in Birmingham.

Titled “A Night to Honour Dr Thomas Mapfumo,” the tribute will celebrate the life and legacy of the iconic artist, widely recognised as the pioneer of Chimurenga music—a genre that has played a central role in shaping Zimbabwe’s cultural identity.
Dr Mapfumo rose to prominence during a defining era in Zimbabwe’s history, using music as a powerful tool for expression and social commentary. By blending traditional mbira sounds with modern instrumentation, he created a distinctive sound that resonated with the experiences and aspirations of ordinary Zimbabweans.
Over the years, his work has earned him international recognition as a cultural ambassador, with influence stretching across Africa and the global diaspora. His music, often rooted in themes of identity, resistance, and heritage, continues to inspire generations of artists and audiences alike.
The tribute forms part of a two-day ZAA programme aimed at celebrating Zimbabwean excellence and fostering engagement within the diaspora.
On 15 May, the ZAA Diaspora Forum will host “An Audience with Dr Thomas Mapfumo,” an intimate session where the music legend is expected to share insights into his personal journey, reflect on the evolution of Chimurenga music, and engage directly with attendees on issues of culture, identity, and legacy.
The following evening, the Gala Dinner will feature the main tribute event, bringing together business leaders, policymakers, creatives, and cultural stakeholders. The programme will include a formal recognition ceremony alongside curated cultural performances and reflections on Dr Mapfumo’s impact.
Organisers say the tribute is not only a celebration of an individual, but a recognition of the broader role of music and culture in shaping national identity and global narratives.
The event is expected to draw members of the Zimbabwean diaspora from across the UK and beyond, creating a platform to honour one of the country’s most influential cultural figures while celebrating collective achievement.
The Zimbabwe Achievers Awards have, over the years, become a key platform for recognising Zimbabwean excellence globally, and this year’s tribute underscores its commitment to preserving cultural heritage while inspiring future generations.
