HARARE – Afro-fusion musician Memory Chinamasa, popularly known as Yaya Saru, has released a new love-inspired single titled “Don’t Wake Me Up.”

Speaking to Earground News, the Harare-based artist shared that the song draws deeply from personal experiences, capturing the intensity and beauty of love in its most immersive form.
“The title ‘Don’t Wake Me Up’ is definitely rooted in personal emotion,” she said. “It comes from that space where something feels so real and so perfect, even if it might not be permanent. It’s about wanting to stay in a moment that brings you peace.”
Yaya Saru, who has been steadily building her presence in the music industry, recently released “Ndokumirira,” produced by 6six under Zimbarock Music and engineered by Nyasha Timbe. She described her latest release as a defining moment in her artistic journey.
“This single is an important step in my journey because it really defines my sound and direction. It’s more intentional, more honest. It’s setting the tone for what’s coming next,” she explained.
The song’s message revolves around holding onto moments that feel safe, beautiful, and healing even when reality may suggest otherwise. It explores themes of escapism, love, and emotional vulnerability.
Yaya Saru highlighted that the songwriting process for “Don’t Wake Me Up” was organic and deeply emotional.
“I didn’t overthink it I just let it flow. It pushed me into a slightly new direction, especially in how I express vulnerability. It’s more stripped back and intentional.”
She hopes listeners will connect with the track in their own unique ways.
“Whether it reminds them of love, loss, or just a moment they never wanted to end I want it to feel personal to them. That connection is everything.”
Reflecting on the recording process, the artist noted unforgettable moments in the studio.
“There was a moment when everything just clicked the vocals, the emotion, the energy in the room. Those are the moments you can’t plan, and they stay with you.”
Yaya Saru also revealed that the single is part of a larger body of work she is currently developing.
“This is not a one-off. It’s part of something bigger. I’m working towards releasing more music possibly an EP so this is just the beginning.”
