Women Representation In The Arts: Feli Nandi Makes 2024 Redefined Concert

The question of women’s representation in the music industry does not come without some form of sensationalized perspective. It is topical. Gateway Stream recently announced the second installation of Redefined Concert. Following the success of last year’s show, they have renewed their zest with more artists this year and these include Feli Nandi and Master H.

For an industry that can be argued performing well, these additions speak to the broader subject of inclusivity on a night of top billing festivities. Jah Prayzah and Winky D are steadfastly holding the national banner as the most revered ‘G.O.A.T.S’. The question becomes, who has been relatively competing at that level consistently? We choose to look at it from the spectrum of gender mainstreaming. And strictly pursuing a more socially just and sustainable society.

Both traditional and contemporary times in Zimbabwean music history have been a male dominant debacle. This is despite the industry leveraging the support base with a ‘few’ female stars who really perform at top level. One such artist has been Feli Nandi. Her inclusion this year unveils quite conspicuously, the common wisdom that yes, Zimbabwe has brilliant women in the arts. One can also consider great female musicians like Gemma Griffiths, Kikky Badass, Dorcas Moyo, Tamy Moyo and more recently F.R.Y.A who is taking social media by storm as we speak. The list is pretty endless.

‘Redefined’ has been a tried and true concept which seeks to set the record state with the notion of curating a music show that replicates or defines the state of the industry at a particular time. Feli Nandi has been lauded as a formidable brand. She has been consistent with delivering worthwhile performances.”

It is therefore not a rare phenomenon that the arts actually have more stalwart performers who need the same limelight. Feli Nandi making this year’s cut is not an act of sympathy nor discourse of gender. Women have always been the backbone and it is commendable that high profile gigs have been realized.
