The Night the Zim Ninja Wilfred Mashaya Became the People’s Champion

Zimbabwean martial arts icon Wilfred Mashaya etched his name into the country’s sporting history after winning the inaugural People’s Choice Award and the Coach of the Year Silver Award at the 2026 Annual National Sports Awards (ANSA), becoming the first Zimbabwean martial artist and first member of the Uniformed Forces to achieve the remarkable double honour.

The historic ceremony, held on 15 May 2026 at the Casino Marina, Longcheng Plaza in Harare, brought together Zimbabwe’s elite sporting personalities in celebration of excellence across the country’s sporting disciplines. The event was officiated by Guest of Honour Anselem Sanyatwe, who joined athletes, coaches, administrators and sporting legends in recognising the nation’s outstanding performers.

For Mashaya, popularly known as The Zim Ninja, the evening represented more than personal recognition, it symbolised years of dedication to martial arts, youth development and community transformation.

“I first thanked Almighty God for the gift of life, for the talent He entrusted to me and for the grace that carried me throughout my journey,” Mashaya reflected after the ceremony. “Everything I have achieved comes from Him.”

The People’s Choice Award, introduced for the first time at the 2025 ANSA ceremony, was decided entirely by public vote.

Mashaya emerged victorious after receiving an overwhelming 7,816 votes from more than 15,000 votes cast nationwide, underlining his growing popularity beyond the martial arts community.

He was selected ahead of an impressive field of nominees representing Zimbabwe’s top sporting talent, including athletes Vimbayi Maisvorewa, Isaac Mpofu, Tapiwanashe Makarawu, Makanakaishe Charamba, cricketers Sikandar Razaand Brian Bennett, footballers Marshall Munetsi, Emmanuel Jalai and Tawanda Maswanhise, boxer Beavan Sibanda, netball player Thandazile Ndlovu, rugby player Kudzai Weston Mashawi, strength athlete Chido Maenzanise and tennis player **Sasha Chimedza>.

When Eugie Chidhakwa announced Mashaya’s name as the winner, the auditorium erupted into thunderous applause.

“For a brief moment, time stood still,” Mashaya recalled. “Every step to the stage carried years of sacrifice, discipline, mentorship and unwavering belief.”

The celebrations did not end there!

Later in the evening, Mashaya’s name was announced again as the recipient of the Coach of the Year Silver Award, capping an unforgettable night that secured his place in Zimbabwean sporting history.

The achievement marks the first time a Zimbabwean martial artist has won two ANSA honours during the same ceremony, while also making Mashaya the first member of the country’s Uniformed Forces to accomplish the feat.

Beyond Medals

While the awards recognised sporting excellence, Mashaya says his life’s work extends far beyond competition.

An ICO World Champion, he has dedicated much of his career to using martial arts as a tool for youth empowerment through Zim Ninja Academy.

His programmes focus on instilling discipline, leadership, resilience and self-confidence while steering young people away from drug and substance abuse.

“My journey has never been about collecting trophies,” he said. “It has always been about transforming lives.”

Mashaya believes every training session offers young Zimbabweans an opportunity to choose purpose over destructive lifestyles.

“Every dojo is a place where character is built and futures are reshaped. Every young life saved from drugs is a victory greater than any medal.”

Message of Gratitude

Accepting the awards, Mashaya thanked Zimbabweans for believing in him.

“First and foremost, I give all glory, honour and praise to Almighty God,” he said.

“To every Zimbabwean who voted for me thank you. Your belief means more than words can express. I promise to continue raising our national flag higher on the international stage.”

He also acknowledged fellow nominees, saying every athlete shortlisted deserved recognition.

“I thank the Commissioner-General of Police Stephen Mutamba, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Zimbabwe Karate Union, Zim Ninja Academy, the Sports and Recreation Commission, the Ministry of Sports, my family, friends, supporters and the media fraternity.

“These awards are not mine alone. They belong to every Zimbabwean who believes in discipline, unity, service and hard work.”

For many, Mashaya’s victory represents more than an individual achievement. From humble beginnings to becoming a world champion, his journey has become a powerful example of perseverance and service. Through his academy, he continues to inspire young people from both urban communities and rural areas to pursue education, embrace discipline and believe in their potential.

As dawn broke following the awards ceremony, Zimbabwe was celebrating more than another successful athlete.

It was celebrating resilience, faith, humility and hope.

For one unforgettable night, The Zim Ninja became more than a martial arts champion.

He became the People’s Champion.
