Early Life and Education
Delani Makhalima was born on July 1, 1977, in Zimbabwe, to Lister Godonga Makhalima and Village Sandisiwe Dlomo. His paternal and maternal lineages trace back to the ethnic origins of the Amahlubi people, residing in the Eastern Cape, Kwa-Zulu, and Lesotho. Over time, migrations and intermarriages have rooted his identity in the Xhosa, Zulu, Swati, and Ndebele clans.
His early life was marked by a deep love for music and an insatiable appetite to create, constantly encouraged by his family and nurtured through his obsession. Makhalima’s parents, both music enthusiasts, exposed him to a diverse range of genres, from traditional Zulu and Swati music performed by prominent South African musicians like The Soul Brothers, Amaswazi’emvelo, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, to an eclectic world of international pop sounds. This diverse musical upbringing laid the foundation for his future creative endeavors.
Delani attended Peterhouse Boys College in Marondera, Zimbabwe, where he honed his musical talents and developed a strong foundation in the arts. He organized variety shows showcasing music and dance entertainment, helping the school raise funds for charity projects the school was involved. He also participated in the several school drama plays where he was awarded lead speaking roles. He was part of the school choir, the debate classes and Toastmasters.
Peterhouse, a prestigious private boarding school in Zimbabwe, renowned for its academic excellence and diverse community, further broadened Delani’s horizons. Despite hailing from a humble, moderately lower-middle-class background, his parents’ sacrifices and tireless efforts afforded him this opportunity. However, this privilege came with a sense of guilt, as Delani felt ashamed to accept his father’s offer to pay for music lessons, fearing the financial burden on his family.
Self-conscious about the cost of extra-mural music lessons, Delani took matters into his own hands. He taught himself to play the piano, sneaking into the school chapel after homework or prep, using only a side lamp to illuminate his fingers on the keys. With diligence and dedication, he practiced every day throughout his tenure at Peterhouse, determined to hone his craft without imposing on his parents. This secretive yet passionate pursuit of music became Delani’s solace, a way to express himself and escape the pressures of his circumstances. As he mastered the piano, he began to find his voice, laying the foundation for a future filled with creative expression and innovation.
During school holidays, a young Delani Makhalima would eagerly volunteer at local recording studios, offering to perform various tasks such as sweeping, cleaning, making tea, and running errands for the studio owners. In return, he was granted the opportunity to observe, learn, and ask questions, as well as experiment with equipment when the studio was not in use. This early exposure sparked a deep passion within him.”
Notably, prominent radio personalities on Zimbabwe’s Broadcasting Stations, including Kimble Rodgers, Kudzi Marudza, George Munetsi, and Peter Johns, took Delani under their wing, allowing him to shadow them from the tender age of 11. This unique experience meant that Delani’s holidays were filled with hands-on learning, rather than traditional extracurricular activities.
As a result, Delani found himself immersed in the world of music production and sound engineering, assisting studio owners and DJs with various tasks such as carrying equipment, organizing playlists, creating jingles, and managing on-air calls. This invaluable experience further fueled his passion and laid the foundation for his future success in the industry.
Following the completion of his secondary education, Delani Makhalima embarked on a journey of higher learning at the prestigious University of Cape Town in South Africa. Although enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law, Delani’s true passions lay in music, media, and entrepreneurship. This pivotal period was marked by exploration, growth, and self-discovery.
During his time at UCT, Delani actively sought out opportunities to hone his craft, joining the university’s radio station, UCT Radio, and participating in various on-campus events as a hired DJ. This hands-on experience not only deepened his understanding of the music industry but also allowed him to develop his skills as a music producer and sound engineer.
Seeking to further enhance his knowledge and skills, Delani embarked on a short introductory course at Cape Audio College in 1998, where he was immersed in live music technical expertise, rigging, lighting, and studio production. He gained hands-on experience with industry-standard digital consoles and workstation software, including Pro Tools, Steinberg Nuendo, and Apple Logic.
This coursework solidified his foundation in music production and sound engineering, laying the groundwork for his future success. Delani’s determination led him to frequently visit prominent radio stations, including Good Hope FM and Metro FM, as well as major record companies like Gallo, Universal, and EMI Music, where he would pitch demos, forge connections and seek out opportunities.
A Rare Condition: Musical Ear Syndrome
Delani Makhalima lives with Musical Ear Syndrome (MES), a rare neurological condition where he constantly hears a vast, internal soundtrack. This internal music is not just a product of his imagination but a tangible, auditory experience beyond his control. Any little sound around him can trigger inspiration involuntarily, making his brain a receptive instrument for music.
Since age six, Delani has been channeling this internal music into his creative genius for composition. He can craft a full song in mere minutes and while this may sound like a good thing, it does poses challenges with focus and concentration. Often, zoning him out of his immediate surroundings. The condition at times, limits his participation in public spaces, especially loud and crowded environments, causing him to avoid social gatherings and large crowds. When inspiration strikes, he must withdraw to a secluded space to channel what he’s hearing, allowing him to “vent it out” and decrease the internal volume.
He however, remains grateful for the ceaseless rivers of music pouring in his mind, attributing it to God’s higher power that orchestrates the melodies and lyrics, and he’s just a vessel chosen to bring to audible life these creations for everyone else to hear. The music is always present, a constant companion that he can’t turn off. At times, it’s a gentle hum, a soft melody that provides comfort and solace. Other times, it’s a cacophony of sounds, a chaotic symphony that threatens to overwhelm him.
Over the years, Delani has learned to harness this internal music, now being able to switch it on and off for periods of time, using it to fuel his creativity and passion for composition. He carries a recorder with him to capture the essence of inspiration as it pours in. However, MES is not curable, and he often refers to it as the gift and the curse in his life.
Humble Beginnings: Miss South Africa Beauty Pageant
In 1999, Delani embarked on a pivotal journey to Johannesburg alongside his best friend, Donda Sizwe Khumalo driven by a shared passion for music and a desire to showcase their talents. Their mission was to pitch two songs they had co-written to the esteemed Miss South Africa beauty pageant, organized by VWV Events Management. The duo hoped to capture the attention of industry professionals and secure a spot for their music in the prestigious event.
After a rigorous selection process, their song “Mirror Mirror” was chosen as the official theme song for the Miss South Africa beauty pageant of 1999. This coveted opportunity allowed Delani, along with his musical group comprising Donda Sizwe Khumalo and Kenneth “Mr. Bell” Jonasi, to take center stage and perform live in front of a vast audience.
Their electrifying performance not only mesmerized the crowd but also caught the attention of industry heavyweights. The exposure proved to be a significant confidence booster for Delani’s songwriting abilities, leading to a recording deal offer from the renowned Sony BMG Entertainment. Additionally, the group was approached by Ken Simmons & Jessica Motaung Management, who offered to represent them as their artist management team.
However, despite the promise and potential, the group disbanded several months later in early 2000 due to personal reasons. The disbandment led to a disconnection from the industry opportunities they had established, and the momentum they had built began to fade.
Although this setback could have been a crushing blow, Delani’s experience and achievements during this period played a crucial role in shaping his future endeavors and solidifying his passion for music. The time spent performing, writing, and collaborating had honed his skills, and he emerged from this chapter with a renewed sense of purpose and determination.
The Root of Stone: Shamiso Entertainment and Galaxy Records
It was not to long after where Delani meet up with an old friend, Gilbert Muvavarirwa’s who had now built a studio and ignited his career in 2000 at Shamiso Records, where together they pioneered the first urban music compilation, “The Future.” Gilbert funding the project and Delani producing the talent he had scouted, with assistance from Innocent Tshuma. This groundbreaking project showcased unknown young artists, introducing a new genre of music to the country. Within a year of working together, and after a dispute on the shareholding and direction of the business, Gilbert and Delani parted ways in 2001.
After parting ways with Shamiso Records in 2002, Delani founded Galaxy Records. Business partners Lennox Chibanda, Elimon Taundi, and Innocent Tshuma joined Galaxy at a later stage, bringing invaluable insight, investment, and contributions to the tremendous momentum and growth of the business.

During his remarkable two-year tenure at Galaxy Records, Delani Makhalima achieved an unprecedented feat in music production, co-writing, playing all instruments, and single-handedly producing over a hundred songs. This impressive body of work includes 49 chart-topping singles, with 27 reaching the number one spot on the National chart – a record unmatched by any other music producer.
Galaxy Records quickly became the most successful independent label, not only showcasing Delani’s exceptional talent as a music producer, cementing his status as one of the greatest ever, at just 23 years old, but also impressing his business management acumen.
Delani’s extensive Zimbabwe discography boasts notable hits such as David Chifunyise’s “Tauya Naye” and “Hapana Chakaipa”, Guess’s heartfelt tribute to mothers, “Amai”, and Plaxedes Wenyika’s “Tisaparadzane”, which Delani wrote in English during high school and later translated to Shona. Other notable hits include “Wadarirei Ko” and the powerful ballad “Pasina Iwe” featuring his brother, Sanii Makhalima, Decibel’s “Nakai” and “Chido”, Pastor G’s gospel hit “Tshibilika”, Roy & Royce’s “Handirege”, and the ZBC theme song “Sisonke” performed by Nonsikelelo and Sanii Makhalima.
Additionally, he co-produced with the legendary Isacc Chirwa “Score Warriors” by Various Artists, a song for the Zimbabwe National Soccer team, and Gospel Legend, Nathan Jera’s “Tirikuchema”, whose instrumental version was used as the background signature track for Radio Zimbabwe’s “Kwaziso Programme” for 10 years.
Delani’s production credits extend to works with notable artists such as Willom Tight, Kudzai Sevenzo, Shame & Nathan, NME, Sarah Mwayerah, Mafrik, Gorden Tau Ndzira, Thulani Nyashanu, Star Gee, Vabati Va Jehova, UK-based 2Short and Mr. Slimes, Madd Bwoy Kaki, Sniper Storm, Shamiso Gomo, South African-based Skar Jay, Major Playaz, and Sanii Makhalima’s “Usadaro” featuring Nesto and the power ballad “Ndofefeterwa”, which he wrote while waiting for a studio session with Pastor G.”
What’s remarkable about Delani’s achievements is that he accomplished this despite Shona not being his first, second, or third language. He would compose melodies and collaborate with native speakers to interpret his lyrical ideas, often translating phrase from isiZulu/Ndebele or English into Shona. Those songs were then, given to an artist to sing.
Despite his immense contributions to the Zimbabwean and African music industries, Delani Makhalima has yet to receive formal recognition in the form of awards. His absence from award lists is a missed opportunity to recognize his tireless efforts, innovative spirit, and lasting legacy. As his impact continues to resonate, it is essential to recognize and accolade his contributions to ensure that his legacy is cemented in the annals of African music history.
In 2003, Delani started receiving offers to work on productions in South Africa, a testament to his growing reputation as a talented music producer. These opportunities came from notable industry players, including Universal Music, now led by CEO Sipho Dlamini, and BMG Publishing and A&R representatives Jay Savage and Lance MacCormick. This marked a significant turning point in Delani’s career, as he was invited to collaborate with top artists and contribute to high-profile projects.
The relocation to South Africa in 2004 was a strategic move to further his career and tap into the country’s vibrant music scene. However, this decision also led to the closure of Galaxy Records, as the economic conditions in Zimbabwe made it challenging for the label to sustain itself. The high inflation rate and unstable environment forced Delani to make the difficult decision to shut down the label, despite its remarkable success and contribution to the Zimbabwean music industry.
Delani’s move to South Africa marked the beginning of a new chapter in his career, as he continued to produce music and collaborate with top artists. His expertise and innovative approach have made him a sought-after producer, and his legacy continues to inspire and influence the music industry in Africa and beyond.
