Seed Co, Africa’s premier seed company, proudly marks its 85th anniversary—a milestone celebrating resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to agricultural development across the continent.

At the grand celebration event held at Three Monkeys in Harare, the Group CEO Mr Morgan Nzwere addressed esteemed guests, including government officials, industry leaders, technical partners, and, most importantly, the farmers who have been at the heart of the company’s journey.
Seed Co’s journey began in 1940 with a clear mission: to provide high-quality seeds tailored to the needs of Zimbabwean farmers. From these humble beginnings, the company has grown into a regional powerhouse, revolutionizing seed breeding and production across Africa.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry Dr. Thomas Utete Wushe said, “Because as long as there is soil to till, as long as there are farmers to feed nations, as long as there are dreams waiting to be harvested, Seed Co will keep growing.”
The company’s pioneering spirit is evident in its long list of industry firsts. Seed Co developed and marketed the world’s first single-cross hybrid seed (SR 52) in 1952. In 1968, it became the first African company to package maize hybrid seeds in small packs, making hybrid technology accessible to small-scale farmers. Over the decades, Seed Co introduced disease-resistant varieties, drought-tolerant hybrids, and high-yielding seed solutions, ensuring sustainable farming practices and improved food security.
One of its most remarkable achievements is the development of SC727, Africa’s highest-yielding conventionally bred maize variety, capable of producing up to 21 tons per hectare under optimal conditions. This breakthrough has played a crucial role in transitioning many farmers from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture.
Recognizing the need for growth beyond Zimbabwe, Seed Co expanded into regional markets in the 1990s. By 1998, operations had begun in Zambia, followed by acquisitions and expansions into Mozambique, Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda, Uganda, and beyond.
A significant milestone was reached in 2014 when Seed Co formed a strategic alliance with Limagrain, a leading global seed company. This partnership granted access to cutting-edge breeding technologies and diverse germplasm, accelerating research and product development. The collaboration has enabled Seed Co to establish a strong presence in Francophone West Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, and even explore North African markets.
Seed Co’s success has been built on continuous investment in research and development. The company reinvests 10% of its turnover into R&D, operating major research stations across the region, including Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, and Mozambique. These facilities breed region-specific seeds that enhance yields and climate resilience.
Seed Co has also expanded its seed conditioning and production facilities, investing millions in modern processing plants in Zambia, Malawi, Kenya, and Tanzania. In 2021, the company commissioned a state-of-the-art seed drying facility in Zimbabwe, further improving seed quality and production efficiency.
Beyond maize, Seed Co has diversified into wheat, soybean, barley, sorghum, and sunflower production. The company is also expanding into complementary crops like rice and millet, which are crucial for food security in many African nations. Additionally, its vegetable seed business, launched in 2017, is growing steadily across multiple countries.
Governments, financial institutions, and international investors have played a key role in supporting Seed Co’s expansion. Major shareholders, including pension funds and regional banks, have backed the company’s vision of ensuring Africa’s food security.
