Harare, March 11, 2025 – Cimas Health Group yesterday led members of the media on a tour of the Cimas Haemodialysis Centre in Harare, as part of the organisation’s World Kidney Day commemorations. The event highlighted the importance of kidney health awareness and showcased the advanced renal treatment services offered by the facility.

Addressing journalists and health professionals Cimas Medco General Manager Yvonne Sibanda in a statement from the Group CEO Mr. Vuli Ndlovu underscored the significance of this year’s World Kidney Day theme, “Are Your Kidneys OK?”, which emphasises early detection and access to life-saving treatment for kidney disease.
Established in February 1999 as a joint venture with Baxter International-Gambro Lundia AB of Sweden, the Cimas Haemodialysis Centre was developed to address the shortage of dialysis treatment facilities in Zimbabwe. Many patients previously had to seek urgent dialysis services outside the country due to limited local availability.
“As Cimas Health Group, the country’s longest-established private medical aid society and health service provider, we are honoured to host you for this tour of our Haemodialysis Centre. Kidney disease is a growing health concern in Zimbabwe, and we remain committed to providing high-quality dialysis services to meet the rising demand,” read part of the statement from Mr. Ndlovu.
Zimbabwe records approximately 1,000 cases of kidney failure annually, yet only about 700 patients have access to dialysis treatment, leaving many without the care they need. The situation is further complicated by the concentration of dialysis services in urban areas, making it difficult for patients in rural communities to receive timely treatment.
Mr. Ndlovu stressed the importance of early detection, urging individuals at risk—such as those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney disease—to undergo regular screenings.
“Routine visits to healthcare providers can detect kidney issues early, significantly slowing the progression of the disease and improving long-term health outcomes,” he said. “Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and blood pressure management, can also reduce the risk of kidney disease.”
The Cimas Haemodialysis Centre provides treatment for both acute and chronic kidney failure patients, as well as pre-transplant evaluations. The facility is staffed by experienced nephrologists, intensive care nurses, and service engineers who ensure high standards of care.

One of the centre’s standout features is its ability to function independently of the national electricity grid. Equipped with a 65kV solar power system, 85kV backup generators, and a three-phase ZESA power supply, the facility ensures uninterrupted dialysis services despite Zimbabwe’s ongoing power challenges.
Additionally, the centre has a state-of-the-art Gambro WRO 103H centralised dialysis water treatment plant and a 50,000-litre water reservoir, ensuring a consistent supply of purified water—an essential component for dialysis procedures.
“As part of our commitment to providing world-class, technology-driven healthcare solutions, we remain dedicated to expanding access to specialised nephrology services,” Mr. Ndlovu said. “Our goal is to inspire healthier communities by integrating sustainable and innovative healthcare solutions.”
He concluded by urging all Zimbabweans to prioritise kidney health through regular check-ups, early detection, and lifestyle modifications to prevent kidney disease.
“We stand with patients, healthcare providers, and stakeholders in advocating for better kidney health awareness, early intervention, and sustainable treatment solutions,” he said. “Together, we can make a difference.”
The media tour provided firsthand insight into the life-saving work being done at the Cimas Haemodialysis Centre, reinforcing the organisation’s role in advancing kidney care in Zimbabwe.
