Today, we bid farewell to an extraordinary woman, Gogo Jane Esau, whose sweet voice and remarkable legacy will echo in the hearts of many for years to come. She passed away on the 18th of January at the age of 91 and has been buried today at Glen Forest in Harare.
Known as the Sweet-Voice Granny Broadcaster Who Won Young Hearts, Jane Esau captivated audiences with her impeccable command of the English language and warm, youthful voice. Her work as a radio teacher and broadcaster at the Rhodesia Broadcasting Corporation (RBC) and later ZBC touched countless lives, particularly among the younger generation.
From hosting beloved programs such as In the Kitchen with Jane, The Dairiboard Show, and Tuffy Tooth Club, to her continuity presentations and newscasting, Jane’s presence on the airwaves was a source of inspiration and education.”
Born in Penhalonga to a Manyika mother and a Malawian father, Jane’s journey began humbly, but her determination and talents led her to shine in multiple roles—teacher, broadcaster, police officer, and beloved mentor. A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she instilled values of resilience, love, and dedication in her family and beyond.
Jane was also a trailblazer in education and public service. From teaching at Bonda Mission to presenting engaging radio lessons, she dedicated her life to empowering others. Her grace, humor, and humility left a lasting impression on colleagues, friends, and audiences alike.
Gogo Jane Esau leaves behind a rich legacy of service, love, and a voice that will forever resonate in the annals of Zimbabwean broadcasting history. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whose lives were enriched by her unwavering care and wisdom.
Rest in eternal peace, Gogo Jane. You will never be forgotten.”
