There are musicians who become famous because they stand in front of the microphone, and there are others whose names may not always appear first on posters but whose fingerprints can be found across an entire generation of music. Delani Makhalima belongs to the latter category. The story of Zimbabwe’s Urban Grooves revolution is often told through the voices that dominated radio, the artists who became household names and the songs that became national anthems. Yet behind many of those voices was a generation of producers, innovators and industry builders who were trying to create something Zimbabwe had not fully embraced before.
