On Tuesday, August 20, 2024, the music industry was rocked by the tragic news of the passing of Tanyaradzwa Muchemwa, affectionately known as Blahtee. The Zimbabwean-born, Johannesburg-based music executive and artist manager was just 37 years old at the time of his untimely death. While the family has not yet released detailed information about the circumstances, they have requested privacy during this difficult time.

Blahtee was a prominent figure in the African music scene, known for his dedication and passion for nurturing talent. He was the driving force behind Blahtee Entertainment, a company that played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of numerous artists. Among those he managed were renowned producer Mr Kamera, rapper and singer FLVME, hit-making producer Tony Duardo, award-winning vocalist Shasha, the rising star Ggoldie, and the soulful Amapiano vocalist Chley. His influence extended far beyond management, as he was instrumental in bringing African music to international platforms.
In a heartfelt statement, Blahtee’s family shared their grief with the world. “It is with extreme pain and sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved friend Blahtee and confirm his untimely passing this morning of Tuesday, August 20, 2024,” they said.
As news of Blahtee’s death spread, tributes poured in from across the globe. Colleagues, friends, and artists whose lives he touched took to social media to express their sorrow and share memories of the man who had such a profound impact on their careers and lives.
Australian-based Zimbabwean artist and producer Sanii Makhalima shared, “Blahtee was more than just a manager; he was a brother who understood the struggle and the hustle. His legacy will live on through the artists he nurtured.”
A lot of music practitioners concurred, “It’s difficult to comprehend that Blahtee is no longer with us. His energy, his vision, his love for music was unmatched. We have lost a giant.”

Zimbabwean music executive Godfrey Mungeni, now based in Canada, reflected on Blahtee’s influence in the industry, saying, “You were such a dominant force in the influence of our careers as artist managers. Your dedication and guidance shaped so many paths, including mine. Rest in power, brother.”
Filmmaker Nico Abote added his voice to the chorus of grief, saying, “Blahtee Muchemwa loved music, did a lot behind the scenes… I will keep alive these old memories of you, sir. Sleep well.”
Evans Mawarire, a well-known activist, shared his admiration for Blahtee’s relentless pursuit of his goals. “This young man was relentless, he chased down his passion and purpose until the doors opened for him. He refused to take no, he refused to be denied, he forced until it worked. But mfanha wangu Blahtee Muchemwa wabhaiza. Wandikuvadza youngerz. Rest in Peace Tanyaradzwa Muchemwa.”
Renowned music producer Take Fizzo also expressed his grief, saying, “I am gutted. Rest in peace, Blahtee Muchemwa. May we all be comforted at such a time. Condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues.”
Kay Media, reflecting on Blahtee’s commitment to supporting emerging talent, said, “Blahtee was a mentor for our @scriptsandbars incubation programme, opening doors to international platforms and making a big impact on the careers of over 50 creatives in the music and literature sectors of Zimbabwe. His legacy lives on!”
