The thunderous roar of Victoria Falls echoed not just from the mighty Mosi-oa-Tunya this past weekend, but from the collective cheers and footsteps of thousands at the just-ended Econet Victoria Falls Marathon. Held on Sunday, July 6th, this year’s edition was a resounding success, cementing its status as a highlight on Zimbabwe’s sporting and tourism calendar.

The event once again drew a truly international crowd, with participants converging from across Zimbabwe and numerous countries worldwide. The influx of runners, their families, and spectators transformed Victoria Falls into a vibrant hub, with hotels reporting full occupancy and local businesses, from curio sellers to tour operators and restaurants, experiencing a significant boom. The marathon clearly continues to be a vital catalyst for economic activity in this iconic destination.
Athletes tackled various distances, including the challenging full marathon (42.2km) and half marathon (21.1km), which notably offered spectacular views as runners crossed the historic Victoria Falls Bridge, often with the spray of the Falls accompanying them. The ever-popular 7.5km fun run ensured that participants of all ages and fitness levels could join in the festivities, with entertainment stations along the route keeping spirits high.
Zimbabwean runners showcased their prowess, with Blessing Waison taking the top spot in the men’s full marathon with a time of 2:13:15, and Fortunate Chidzivo winning the women’s race in 2:41:59.”
The excitement didn’t end at the finish line. The post-race concert, a highly anticipated event in its own right, brought the weekend to a spectacular close. This year, the concert was headlined by none other than South African music sensation Master KG, whose infectious energy and global hits provided the perfect atmosphere for participants to unwind, celebrate their achievements, and dance away any lingering muscle aches. His performance underscored the marathon’s evolution into a comprehensive lifestyle event, blending elite athletics with world-class entertainment.
The 2025 Econet Victoria Falls Marathon was more than just a race; it was a testament to the enduring appeal of Victoria Falls as an adventure capital and a vibrant display of unity, athleticism, and Zimbabwean hospitality. Organizers, participants, and spectators alike are already looking forward to next year’s edition, eager to once again combine the thrill of the run with the breathtaking beauty of one of the world’s natural wonders.
