The name DanMag might not immediately ring a bell now, but give it a few months plus grace, Magara will be a household name. I know this to be true because he recently released a scorcher, Munamato Wangu. I’ve had the song on loop since I first heard it. I even reviewed it here https://tinyurl.com/4eetkv26 , but the music felt too deep, too personal, too well-made to leave it there. I needed to know more about the man behind the music.
So, I reached out to him.
When DanMag, real name Daniel Magara, responded to my message with warmth and humility, it didn’t take long to realise I was speaking to someone who’s more than just a musician.

Born on 24 June 1994 in Zifunzi Village, Zaka, under Chief Nyakunhuwa, DanMag began his music journey in 2012, learning guitar from his older brother George, who built an instrument from a gallon container. He would later teach himself other instruments while attending school, even using class time to quietly produce beats on his laptop. His musical roots were also nourished at home by his sister, Chenesai, a talented singer whose voice inspired him to find his own.
But it’s the depth of experience, personal hardship, family love, and spiritual resilience, that truly defines DanMag’s music. His breakthrough single Munamato Wangu (My Prayer) is a heartfelt tribute to parents, urging us to cherish and support them while they are still with us. “The pain of making it after losing loved ones is unbearable,” he told me. “So I sing asking God to give them more years, more life.”
The song’s message comes from lived experience. After finishing Form 4 in 2013, DanMag faced the harsh realities of city life: paying rent, hustling for income, and still sending something home, even if it was just ten dollars. “Sometimes you get that call from a parent needing something… and you’ve got nothing,” he shared. “But the love they gave you? You just wish you could do more, while they are alive.”

That emotional truth seeps into every chord and lyric. DanMag not only wrote and performed Munamato Wangu, but also recorded, mixed, and mastered it at his own Harare-based DanMag Studios Zimbabwe, which he founded after years of experience running a branch in Bulawayo. His younger brother, HardMag, now manages the Bulawayo studio under the name THM Betaz, allowing DanMag to focus on expanding his musical footprint in the capital.
And don’t let the modesty fool you, he’s no newcomer. While Munamato Wangu may be his first official release, DanMag has been producing music for years for artists such as Mark Ngwazi, Joseph Garakara, Franco Slomo, Tymore Bande, and even collaborated with Munyaradzi Munodawafa. He’s worked across sungura, gospel, and contemporary Zimbabwean genres, often playing all the instruments himself, lead, bass, rhythm guitar, keyboards, drums, percussion, and even backing vocals.
His versatility is remarkable, but he remains grounded. “Rume rimwe harikombi churu,” he said, acknowledging the need for support in today’s social media-driven landscape. “Some of us didn’t even know the difference between a profile and a page until recently.”
That humility is part of what makes DanMag special. But it’s also what’s held him back. After a decade of serving others as a producer, he’s finally stepping into his own light, and it’s about time. He’s currently working on his debut album and contemplating how best to share it: whether to go all-in or focus on pushing Munamato Wangu harder. Either way, what’s clear is that DanMag is not just a singer. He’s a storyteller, a technician, a leader, and an old soul in a young artist’s body.
