Renowned mbira musician and author Hope Masike recently launched her latest book, Mbira Mberi, at Chery Zimbabwe in Harare, drawing a diverse audience from the creative sector, corporate world, and arts community.

The event was marked by strong praise from attendees, who commended Hope Masike for documenting Zimbabwe’s cultural narratives through literature. Many highlighted the importance of preserving artistic knowledge and history in written form for future generations.
Mbira Mberi is a rich, interdisciplinary exploration of the mbira that weaves together history, personal journey, creative storytelling, and practical musical instruction into one uniquely Zimbabwean narrative.
Masike, already an accomplished author, has previously published several works including Ask Me Again (2020), Dzevabvazera (2022), Die With Me (2023), and Our Sacred Place (2024), each exploring themes ranging from women’s experiences and culture to philosophy and love.
With Mbira Mberi, she turns her focus to the mbira—an instrument central to her global career. The book blends practical tutorials, poetry, and memoir-style reflections, offering readers both technical guidance and personal insight. It provides step-by-step instruction on playing traditional and contemporary pieces while exploring the instrument’s historical and cultural significance.
Masike also shares stories from her international performances, reflecting on how the mbira resonates with audiences worldwide. Through these experiences, she illustrates the instrument’s ability to communicate emotion, spirituality, and heritage across cultures.

The launch featured a live performance by Masike and fellow musician Jacob Mafuleni, bringing the essence of the book to life through music.
Speaking at the event, Masike encouraged audiences to engage with the instrument: “I hope after this you’re really, really proud of us. And yeah, I hope you try a song or two.”
Author Audrey Chirenje praised the book’s creativity, noting Masike’s ability to blend different writing styles and genres.
