In line with Zimbabwe’s long-standing tradition of honouring its rich cultural heritage with a month long observation in May, the government has confirmed the 2025 edition of Culture Month, featuring an exciting calendar of activities throughout the country.

The official National Culture Month launch will be presided over by His Excellency the President, Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa, at a date to be announced.
The launch will take place at the homestead of Chief Tshovani in Masvingo Province, symbolically grounding the celebrations in one of Zimbabwe’s most culturally significant regions.
Running from May 1 to 31, this year’s Culture Month will be held under the theme: “Celebrating Indigenous Voices.” This theme highlights the importance of recognising, preserving, and amplifying the cultural expressions and traditions of Zimbabwe’s diverse communities.
According to a Cabinet briefing statement released this Tuesday, the Culture Month objectives are clear and inspiring:
“To celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Zimbabwe, promote cultural diversity and foster national unity; to showcase the diverse cultural practices through various forms that include dance, food, attire, visual arts, literary arts, film, television, music and poetry; and to promote intellectual dialogue for cross-cultural understanding and exchange.”
“The event will celebrate our identity and diverse cultures. It will also be a platform to showcase Zimbabwe’s success stories in cultural development and its commitment to fulfilling regional and international protocols that promote the growth of the creative and cultural industries,” reads the statement.
The month-long celebration has been structured into themed weeks, each offering unique cultural experiences across disciplines and regions:
Week One will focus on reviving and sharing historical recipes and traditional cooking techniques. This culinary celebration aims to connect modern eaters with their roots and foster pride in Zimbabwean gastronomy.
Week Two brings the spotlight to Indigenous Fashion Week, where colourful and distinctive cultural attire will take centre stage in exhibitions, fashion shows, and creative showcases.
Week Three will feature the official national launch of Culture Month, marking the peak of festivities with traditional performances and keynote speeches.
Week Four is dedicated to Indigenous Languages and Cultural Dialogue, celebrating the wealth of local languages through music, dance, poetry, film screenings, and language workshops.
In addition, the government has called on communities across Zimbabwe to actively celebrate and promote their indigenous languages throughout May.
“Provinces will schedule their activities around the Culture Month, and each province will host its Provincial Launch where the respective Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution will officiate as the Guest of Honour,” the statement added.
As the nation enters the month of May, Zimbabweans are encouraged to participate in the vibrant cultural displays, engage in intergenerational storytelling, and support local artists and creators. Culture Month is not just a commemoration—it is a living expression of identity, heritage, and unity.
The celebrations invite every Zimbabwean to reflect on the past, embrace the present, and shape the future through cultural expressions
The month should be a month of colour, pride, and connection—where every drumbeat, every word spoken in an indigenous tongue, and every traditional dish shared reminds us of who we are as a people.
