Khama Billiat and Wilfred Mashaya Headline the Mufakose Lodza Challenge Match, Fun Day, and Awards Ceremony

Zimbabwe soccer icon Khama Billiat and multi-award-winning martial artist Shihan Wilfred Mashaya, popularly known as “Zim Ninja,” were the esteemed guests at the Mufakose Lodza Challenge Match, Fun Day, and Awards Ceremony held on Saturday, January 11, 2025. Billiat served as the Guest of Honor, while Mashaya was a Special Guest at the event organized by Lloyd Muchaka and coordinated by Charles Thole alongside the Mufakose Area A Technical and Organizing Team.

The two stars, both proud sons of Mufakose (affectionately known as Mufombi), were chosen as role models and exemplary achievers to inspire the community that raised them, especially the youth. Their participation highlighted the values of unity, love, and giving back to the community. The event also celebrated the Mufakose Area A Legends and aimed to motivate young people to pursue success and emulate positive role models like Billiat and Mashaya.

A Community United for a Purpose

The event, which brought together both locals and those from the diaspora, emphasized themes such as “No to Drugs and Substance Abuse,” “No to Child Marriages,” “Respect the Girl Child,” and the promotion of good morals, talent, health, and wellness.

Tendai Primary School set the tone for the day by co-hosting the Lodza Challenge matches. In the first match, Tendai Strikers triumphed over their opponents 17-16 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time. The second match featured hosts Area A Football Club against Friends of Lodza, a team of yesteryear stars, including former Premier League players such as Silver Bhebhe, Dominic Kampira, and Brain “Nyozo” Munyani. The select team emerged victorious with a 3-2 win in a thrilling encounter.

Chamimuka Centre: A Star-Studded Affair

The second phase of the event unfolded at Chamimuka Community Centre, where the arrival of Khama Billiat and Wilfred Mashaya caused a buzz. Security personnel had their hands full as excited fans clamored for selfies and photos with the superstars. Even Khama’s parents were present, adding a familial touch to the occasion.

Mashaya thrilled the crowd with an electrifying martial arts display, showcasing his world-class skills and evoking cheers, ululations, and pride from the audience. As someone raised in Mufakose, it was a true homecoming celebration for the “Zim Ninja.”

Honoring Excellence: The Area A Awards

The highlight of the event was the Area A Awards, where the community recognized individuals who have excelled in sports, arts, academics, and business. Khama Billiat had the honor of presenting the awards to the winners:

• Sports: Wilfred Mashaya (Current Sports Person) and Peter Nyamande (Yesteryear Sports Person)

• Arts: Charles “Akoma” Thole

• Business: The late Josephat Masters and Mudiwa Nyamuswa

• Academics: Professor Oliver Mutapuri

• Outstanding Teams: The MTCA Tennis Team of the 80s and 90s (represented by Shepherd Manyumbu) and Hustler Basketball Team (Modern Era)

The festivities continued into the night with food, music, and drinks. The event highlighted Mufakose Area A’s rich history of producing national, regional, and international leaders in various fields, including Justice Muswe (former Zimbabwe table tennis player and president), Rony Mutandagayi (former ZB Bank CEO), and Martin Dzuwa (first black tennis player to win the Zimbabwe Open).
