Harare, January 21, 2026 — Zimbabwean scientist and entrepreneur Freedom Mukanga has been named the 2025 Mandela Washington Fellowship Impact Award winner, becoming the first Zimbabwean to receive the honor since the fellowship was established in 2014.
The award is presented annually by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and recognizes one outstanding alumnus from across Africa for exceptional leadership, measurable community impact, and efforts to strengthen collaboration between African innovators and partners in the United States. Mukanga was selected from a network of more than 7,800 Mandela Washington Fellowship alumni spanning the continent.
The announcement was made at a ceremony hosted by the U.S. Embassy, where U.S. Ambassador to Zimbabwe Pamela Tremont highlighted the significance of the achievement. She described the award as a recognition reserved for an exceptional leader whose work contributes to economic growth, democratic governance, and regional collaboration across Africa.
Mukanga was honored for his ability to translate connections made through the Mandela Washington Fellowship into long-term, high-impact partnerships. His work bridges hydrometeorology, entrepreneurship, and agriculture, strengthening cooperation between U.S. institutions and stakeholders across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Freedom Mukanga is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of FreedPerScientific, a leading provider of advanced weather observation systems and meteorological data services across Africa.
Through strategic collaborations with U.S. partners including Campbell Scientific, Synoptic Data, and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, Mukanga has played a key role in enhancing weather data collection and improving disaster preparedness in Zimbabwe. These initiatives have contributed to stronger early warning systems and improved climate resilience.
Mukanga’s engagement extends beyond science and technology. He has worked with U.S. educational institutions to provide training and upskilling opportunities for emerging entrepreneurs and poultry farmers, initiatives that support food security, promote entrepreneurship, and expand trade and investment linkages between the United States and Zimbabwe.
Widely regarded as a connector between U.S. expertise and African innovation, Mukanga exemplifies the goals of the Mandela Washington Fellowship by translating knowledge exchange into sustainable development outcomes.
