EU and Culture Fund Award USD $27,929 to Boost Zimbabwe’s Creative Sector

The latest round was announced in Harare this Thursday, with a focus on promoting inclusion, innovation, skills development, economic empowerment, and international artistic collaboration.

The initiative is critical in that it addresses one of the most persistent challenges in Zimbabwe’s creative sector: the lack of sustainable funding.

Insufficient financial support has long been a major obstacle to the growth and professionalisation of the country’s arts and culture industry.

Despite Zimbabwe’s rich reservoir of artistic and cultural talent, many creatives continue to face difficulties in accessing the resources necessary to fully realise their potential and reach wider audiences.

According to an official statement, the latest round of grants ranges from USD $1,598 to USD $10,000 per project, targeting a wide spectrum of initiatives within Zimbabwe’s creative industries.

Among the funded efforts is a disability-inclusive visual arts exhibition designed to amplify the voices and creativity of persons with albinism through workshops, public showcases, and advocacy around accessibility in the arts.

Another project focuses on empowering 100 women to generate income by transforming locally sourced gemstones into high-value jewellery, in collaboration with the Zimbabwe School of Mines and the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe.

In addition, a young Zimbabwean theatre educator will benefit from a mobility grant to participate in a knowledge exchange and international capacity-building programme in Germany.”

The funding will also support an international theatre festival and arts platform that aims to showcase both Zimbabwean and global talent—broadening the country’s cultural footprint and fostering cross-cultural dialogue. Europe continues to be a significant market and appreciative audience for Zimbabwean arts and cultural products.

This latest round of grants builds on ongoing support from the European Union and the Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust, reaffirming the role of the creative sector in driving inclusive development and international engagement.
