Kasiva Mutua is best known as East Africa’s most celebrated female percussionist, breaking gender norms in a field traditionally dominated by men. Her career is a testament to resilience, talent, and a deep reverence for her cultural heritage. With the release of Ndikweteela on January 17, 2025, Kasiva transitions from a percussionist to a multifaceted artist, revealing her talents as a vocalist, guitarist, and storyteller.”
Ndikweteela: A Journey of Heartache and Healing
Ndikweteela, meaning “I give you” in Kasiva’s native Kamba language, is a poignant narrative of love and loss. The song captures the unraveling of a long-distance relationship, expressing heartbreak, insecurity, and the irony of infidelity in separation. As a farewell anthem, it blends sorrow with hope, reflecting Kasiva’s gift for storytelling through music.
The visually arresting music video, shot in the stunning landscapes of Ol Donyo Nyokie in Kenya, is rich with cultural symbolism. A powerful moment sees a Maasai man dancing alongside Kasiva as she plays the drum, an instrument traditionally reserved for men in many African communities. This scene symbolizes Kasiva’s mission to challenge gender barriers while honoring the traditions that inspire her artistry.
Desturi: A Celebration of Heritage and Innovation
Scheduled for release on February 14, 2025, Desturi (Swahili for “Traditions”) is Kasiva’s debut album—a bold statement of cultural pride and artistic growth. The album’s 11 tracks are a sonic tapestry that weaves East African call-and-response vocals, West African-inspired drumming, and rhythmic influences from across the continent.
Standout tracks include Aoko, a heartfelt ode to forgiveness and remembrance, and Twende Mbele, a rousing anthem of empowerment and unity. The latter will release as a single on February 7, 2025, giving listeners another glimpse into Kasiva’s vision.
With themes exploring African identity, love, spirituality, and even female reproductive rights, Desturi serves as both a celebration of tradition and a platform for dialogue on contemporary issues.
