The Takunda Deaf Trust School, an inclusive educational institution for children with hearing impairments, officially opened its doors in Nyatsime, Chitungwiza on the 9th of April 2026 with the unveiling of new buildings. The event was attended by a number of stakeholders from officials from the Government of Zimbabwe, the Chief, the creative community and friends of the school from Germany.

Founded eleven years ago by Zimbabwean sculptor and educator Ronika Tandi, the school marks a significant milestone in expanding access to inclusive education for deaf children and promoting community-based learning. Tandi is widely recognized for her abstract stone carvings that preserve the natural texture of the stone, alongside her dedication to empowering deaf communities through the arts.
Her journey began at Emerald Hill School for the Deaf, where she volunteered for nine years as an art teacher following her graduation from the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in 2008.
“It was through this interaction that I developed a deep connection with deaf children and became passionate about supporting their education,” said Tandi. “I realized there was a gap in resources and access, especially in my community in Chitungwiza, and I felt I had a role to play in addressing it.”
Tandi’s vision for Takunda was further shaped during a Cultural Exchange Programme in Germany in 2014, where she secured support from partners who believed in her mission. In 2015, the initiative began in a modest garage with just five students.
Over the years, through community support and resilience, the school has grown to accommodate 65 students leading to the establishment of its new, expanded facilities in Nyatsime, Manyame.
Named after her daughter, Takunda is built on a vision of inclusion creating a learning environment where children with and without hearing impairments can learn side by side, free from discrimination and stigma. The school also promotes the use of sign language within the broader community.
“With Takunda Deaf Trust School, we hope to ensure that every child, regardless of hearing ability, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive,” Tandi added.
The official opening marks a powerful milestone in Tandi’s decade-long journey of dedication to inclusive education, community development, and the transformative power of the arts.
