International sculptor DOMINIC BENHURA receives US city honor

The City of Carmel, Indiana (USA) recently unveiled a new stone sculpture by Zimbabwean sculptor Dominic Benhura. In addition to that the City proclaimed the 14th of May 2022 as the DOMINIC BENHURA DAY.

Dominic’s work has been included in many major exhibitions both in Zimbabwe and internationally.

In an official communiqué the City of Carmel announced:

new sculpture was unveiled at the corner of Main Street and Veterans Way. “Swing Me Higher, Mama”, by Zimbabwean sculptor Dominic Benhura, depicts a mother joyfully swinging her child. A reception for Benhura followed the unveiling, at Kuaba Gallery.

Benhura traveled to Carmel from his home country of Zimbabwe to participate in the installation and unveiling of his work. Carmel City Council President Kevin “Woody” Rider and Clay Township Board Mary Eckard were joined by members of the Carmel Public Art Advisory Committee, the Mayor’s Advisory Commission on Human Relations, and other City officials in celebration of the unveiling of this sculpture. “Swing Me Higher, Mama” is located on the southeast corner of the intersection at Main Street and Veteran’s Way next to Carmel Chocolate Café.

Zimbabwean artist Dominic Benhura has become internationally known for large-scale mother-and-child sculptures composed of stone.
