BREAKDANCE: Kudzanai Chikowe’s 2024 Olympics dream to represent Zimbabwe.

A dream can never be too big if you are determined and work towards it. Having broken many barriers in the past to become one of the country’s finest dancers Kudzanai Chikowe aka BBOY KID TRIBE wants to compete in the 2024 Olympics. This follows the news in 2020 that Breakdance will for the first time be included as a sporting category at the Olympics set to run from July 26 to the 11th of August 2024 Paris, France.

The 23 years old from Kuwadzana in Harare has for over a decade been specialising in breakdance, gymnastics and contemporary dance having started at the age of 12.

Jibilika Festival 2016

He has managed to win a lot of competitions like Jibilika Festival in 2015, the French Battle Rivalskool where he came 2nd in 2016, The Street Culture Festival in Zambia 2017, Vibe Night Online Battles , RDE breaking Card and the Redbull bBC One in 2017 in South Africa representing Zimbabwe. Chikowe was twice selected to represent Zimbabwe at the international Dancestar competition in Croatia. In 2018 he performed at the biggest festival in Zimbabwe the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) as part of Jibilika‘s 4GO10Tribe crew. The crew also won at the Chibuku Neshamwari Dance competition and the K-POP dance contest.

In 2019 he together with the AfroEmpire crew toured and performed in Saudi Arabia. The following year he travelled to the United Kingdom as part of the eclectic Meet My Ancestors group which is run by renowned Zimbabwean director John Pfumojena.

The artist in residence program exposed Chikowe to new possibilities and re-ignited his desire and confidence to represent Zimbabwe at the biggest sporting showcase in the world.

Iam determined to represent Zimbabwe. I have my eyes on winning at the Olympics. I see that dream coming true.

Apart from touring Kudzanai has performed with tens of music artists on stage, in music videos and theatre productions. The experience has given him a 360 grooming that makes him an outstanding dancer and athlete.

At the Olympics athletes known as B-boys and B-girls will compete for the ultimate sporting prize. The sporting discipline is born out of the Hip Hop culture’s breakdance an artform that has been growing in Zimbabwe through various initiatives such as Jibilika Dance Trust, Undisputed Dance Battle, Breakdown and several others.

Given the amount of talent that Chikowe and several other dancers have it will be unfortunate if the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee misses such an opportunity to engage the players in the Breakdance scene and get the country represented at the Olympics in the Breakdance category. This dream can come true and may inspire a whole nation.
