The hip hop and music community in the country and across the globe have been reacting to the death with grief and shock. earGROUND will feature a series of tributes starting with music promoter, journalist and OUTHERE records executive Georg Milz of Germany who worked with Cal_Vin before on a number of projects including his tour of Germany in 2016 for the Urban Africa Festival.
Zimbabwe has a lost a great talent last night – I wrote a little text in memory of us working together … #RestInPeace Cal Vin!

When we went to Bulawayo to link up with artists together with SYMBIZ from Berlin and In Place of War in 2015, we met up with artists such as Syko Tek, Awakhiwumzomhle and Djembe Monks. I also reached out to Cal_Vin. I had written about his collaboration with South African star Cassper Nyovest “Z’khuphan”
The song/collaboration became a statement against xenophobic violence in South Africa.
When we programmed the urban africa festival and academy back in Cologne in 2016, I asked Cal Vin if he would want join in.
So he and Awa came together, already a weekend before the festival, to do an additional show at the african film festival in cologne and promote the coming workshops, events and performances.
They did amazing performances and talks about ndebele rap meets kwaito and steet styles from Luveve or Makokoba. We had a great time while doing last preparations for the festival.
After the shows in Germany, we had kept contact and while I started to work with Awa on her debut album together with Ghanaian Stallion we had also been talking to Cal Vin about possible future collaborations.
Whenever I had asked Cal Vin since, to work on a song, he got immediately back to me playing his first recordings, if it was for a song for DJ Densen‘s Lockdown riddim challenge, FARHOT‘s beat compilation on a beat by Alan, that lead to “Motivation”, a song that won the competition or a feature for Awa’s upcoming album.
It was tough waking up this morning reading a text-message from Awa, that Cal Vin had passed on. I will miss the excitement and his voice messages he used to send whenever we worked together. All thoughts are with his family and friends.Georg Milz
I put together some footage from the festival to a remix Buddy and Zhi (Symbiz) had worked on “Z’khuphan”, in a version featuring Cassper Nyovest. You can get it on Bandcamp. Feel free to share and support! All proceeds will go to Cal Vin’s family. #RestInPeace!
